The Cardinal Sin

Title: Eye-opener
Label: Grey Flight Records

The Cardinal Sin

The Cardinal Sin - like the mythical phoenix – rose from the ashes of three mainstay Minneapolis bands: Cadillac Blindside (Fueled By Ramen Records), the Crush (Adeline Records), and Song of Zarathustra (Troubleman Unlimited Records). Cadillac Blindside and SOZ shared a practice space in an industrial wasteland in Minneapolis. However, they rarely saw each other due to constant touring. They communicated with one another through cryptic messages scrawled on the wall or well intentioned, if derisive, jokes made into stickers and placed on instrument cases.

James Russell and Rebecca Hanten, finding Cadillac Blindside dissolving for myriad reasons, asked T. J. McInnis of Song of Zarathustra to start playing with them. Lacking a bass player, T.J. suggested his band-mate Mark Shaw. Thus the line-up was formed. They quickly set about writing songs fusing the dark pop of Cadillac Blindside with the more angular and esoteric rock of Song of Zarathustra.

Within a few months an eight-song demo emerged featuring "Where we Shine" and "Woke Up in Pain." The Cardinal Sin then followed Motion City Soundtrack and Limbeck out on a tour of the Midwest. Locally, The Cardinal Sin played with Against Me, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Hot Hot Heat, and The Supersuckers

After a year and thirty shows, TJ opted out of the band to pursue his other interest: tattooing. Though The Cardinal Sin was unhappy to see him go, the split was entirely amicable. Jon Ness, formerly of The Crush (Adeline Records), was the clear choice to join on bass and Mark switched to guitar. Jon was a good friend and had been to every show he could come to, as long as The Crush was in town.

The timing made it so that Jon’s first show was in Bowling Green, Ohio with The Lawrence Arms. The Cardinal Sin traveled out to Boston with The Lawrence Arms and much drinking and Sharpie-mustache-drawing brought everybody together.

During a second tour with The Lawrence Arms, (this time heading West), The Cardinal Sin was reintroduced to Grant Quick and Grey Flight Records in Los Angeles. Cadillac Blindside had known him previously. He expressed an interest in working with The Cardinal Sin.

In December of 2004 The Cardinal Sin went into The Hideaway studio to work with Grant Cutler for the Grey Flight EP. "Where We Shine" and "Woke up in Pain" were re-recorded as well as four other songs.

The Cardinal Sin continues to write songs with its solid lineup. All the members express a sort of satisfied disbelief over how well the lineup works, musically and interpersonally. The plans for the future are simple and clear: put out records and tour as much as possible. The van waits.
